I almost went through the same thing with a domain I just recently gave up because it was nearing the expiration date and I had no desire to renew it. I tried Ebaying it but I went into the expiration period while the sale was finishing up. Out of curiousity, how long was it expired before they gave it up? I mean, my registrar gives me 30 days after expiration to actually pay another year and deal with it then. I thought most were pretty cool about that but it sounds like these guys weren't. Second, you are absolutely right about providing false information, especially since he did it recently after some laws have been passed. The only thing I've found is that it can be a giant pain in the ass to fight it this way. I have a client who is using the same argument and the registrar has been very slow to pursue the problem and even if they DO yank the domain they've said they will release it back to the public and my client will have "the same chance as anyone" to grab it back. Of course, registrars vary...but still a crappy situation. Good luck to you.
